Thiers is a small town in the region known as the Auvergne, which lies beyond Burgundy's southern boundary. It is about an hour and a half due west of Lyon, and well off the tourist beaten path.  The capital is Claremont Ferrand, a town known for its rugby and being the headquarters of the Michelin group.

Knives have been made in Thiers for at least 600 years.  The availability of fast flowing water would have been an attraction, but exactly why this place was chosen is not now known.  At any rate, the reputation of Thiers for high quality knives and cutlery has continued unabated to this day.

We have chosen to work with two producers in the town, Fontenille-Pataud, and Claude Dozorme.  The latter is a Master Cutler, a guarantee of quality, and Fontenille operate at the absolute luxury end of cutlery production. If you require something completely unique, then they can satisfy your requirements - at a price!  Their latest cork screws have been three years in the design phase, and the result is simply stunning.  We do not believe that there is a more attractive and functional cork screw on the market, and considering that each item is hand made by one assigned experienced worker from start to finish, the prices are reasonable. We show several items on our site, but are pleased to discuss requirements for made to order.
